MAX ALERT! Nuclear Alert In New Mexico, We Suspect Fukushima Radon + Fallout & Spallation Products.

FRIDAY evening, underground sensors at DOE's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant detected elevated Airborne radiation levels. Obviously taking 48 hours to warn the public is unacceptable. Based on JetStream patterns we believe he source of this detection MAY be Fukushima; as such we expect a report out of the DOE blaming Radon as the source. The Fukushima event in question would have occurred around 2/8/14

Hot Fukushima corium is steaming naturally radioactive Radon laden ground water on an industrial scale. It is ground water that has been in direct contact with the melted radioactive core, as such the steam also contains manmade radioactive materials.

Of course the obvious question is how would airborne Fukushima fallout make it into an underground cavern? The answer is that the DOE caverns are ventilated with fresh air. That ventilation was isolated when the alarm system went off.

One would hope that IF the source radiation was from the plant itself that situation would have been confirmed already and appropriate actions taken. It's possible that DOE is confused by the readings of Radon, Fukushima Fallout products, and possibly even short half life nuclear spallation products resulting from the interaction of Fukushima fallout and Solar flares.


In any of the above scenarios the situation is Max Alert worthy, STAY OUT OF THE RAIN. (freezing rain and rain is forecast for Saint Louis 2/17/14)

Our Lab Finds 4 Bq/Kg in Missouri Black Walnuts

So far the POTRBLOG team has spent approximately $2,300 for professional gamma spectrometry lab services to test key food products which may give insight into the ongoing buildup of Fukushima radioactivity in North America. We thank those who have supported this effort via donations, as of today we have received approximately $1,000 in donations to help offset these expensive tests.  Anyone who has donated may email us to request copies of the lab reports (with personal information redacted).

In the most recent lab test we submitted wild black walnuts harvested from a local playground area; these trees reside in a usually muddy/swampy small bottom land area. As such, these black walnuts may make for good indicators of bio-available radioactive contamination. Our own Geiger counter tests indicated that these Walnuts were radioactive at 150% over background radiation (580 counts vs 376 counts), hence we sent these off to the professional lab for further testing.

On the good news side, heavier radioactive man made isotopes such as Cs-134/ 137 were not detected by the lab. This is good news as previously we had detected Fukushima Cesium 137 in a 2011 ground beef sample. On the negative side, the Black Walnuts tested positive for  lighter weight radioactive Be-7 at  4 Bq/Kg.

 Be-7 is lighter than both Nitrogen and Oxygen, it is formed via spallation when Neutrons and/or Protons slam into Nitrogen / Oxygen atoms.  One possible source for the creation of Be-7 is the interaction between Fukushima Corium and the liquid (or gaseous) Nitrogen being pumped into the Fukushima 'containment'. The other possible source is from Solar Coronal Mass Ejections impacting Earth's atmosphere. The former the Nuclear Industry will likely never ever mention. The later is a well known phenomena, and was heavily mentioned  as a cause of Be-7 detections during the initial phase of the ongoing Fukushima disastor;

In the case of our Missouri Black Walnuts, we cannot rule out Fukushima as a source, but we give more credence to CME production as the majority source. Overall, as the results of our tests, we have lowered our risk mitigation threshold for MIDWEST produce grown prior to December 2012. Our risk mitigation threshold remains high for any and all food products from  Canada and those food products west of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountains. 

Our risk mitigation lowering is based on the Midwest drought and the negative bio-available detections since the initial phase of the ongoing catastrophe. On the other hand, every rain storm once again raises the long term bio-accumulation risk.

In possible future tests, the next item we would like to have tested in the professional Gamma Spectrometry lab is a Florida Key's Coconut which fell from the tree in July 2011. We believe this coconut will provide insight into the southerly range of the initial radioactive Cesium  plume from Fukushima. Gamma Ray Bursts & Fallout At 37 Times Background Radiation

3 Fallout Events Today!
The fallout worsened as the storms grew stronger and reached higher in the atmosphere
Gamma &  X-ray bursts from lightning were detected by our live full time outdoor radiation monitor. Once burst at approximately 5pm was strong enough to set off our radiation alarm.

The events were as follows:

1pm RAIN 10x over background
5pm STORM 20x over background
11pm STORM 37x background

The red X in the chart below shows the Gamma / X-ray burst which triggered our radiation alarm.
The value recorded in the chart is a one minute average reading. Our radiation alarm triggers off  of a 30 second moving average for anything over 50 CPM. We estimate that the instantaneous Gamma burst detection peaked at 600 counts.

ALERT! Solar Proton Spallation Event Watch

A strong Solar  X-class flare on 7/6/12 may result in a large Earthly proton bombardment. Under the right conditions, these protons could impact airborne Fukushima fallout and produce a veritable witch's brew of radioactive iodines and other spallation products.

Typically when these events happen, the effects are first reported in the Nordic countries as radioiodine detections of indeterminate origins.  We suspect that the recent upswing in Fukushima fallout may result in unusual phenomena tied to this X -class flare. Please watch for and share any reports of any unusual activity.

Another Solar Storm, Another Round of European Radioactive Iodine Detections To Come?

Another series of Solar storms have been underway this week, previously these solar storms have correlated well with indeterminate radioiodine detections in Europe. Our hypothesis predicting these European Iodine "Jod" events has been solar proton spallation of Fukushima generated Cesium 133, and/or Plutonium 239. Given that the geomagnetic impacts of this storm are predicted to potentially be severe, the available spallation zone may be greater than typical. Please keep an eye out for reports of unusual radiation detections over the next week or so, especially in the sunlit side of the impact area (expected to be eastern Europe)

Spallations aside, a severe geomagnetic storm prediction would indicate that it is advisable to take cost effect appropriate risk mitigation actions. A simple wise precaution would be to make sure one's vehicles have a full tank of fuel

Correction, a check of the Daylight maps indicates that Russia southwards to Australia and New Zealand were under daylight conditions during the CME.

As predicted by the POTRBLOG team on January 21st. "The evidence for such effects would be distributed and difficult to localize detections of fresh radioactive fallout" .

Radioactive Iodine is now being reported to have been detected in Europe during the time period in question. We expect that there will also be evidence of Plutonium 239 spallation.

Measures radioactive iodine in Barents Region

The Barents news report indicates that iodine detections where in the NORTHERN Norway and NORTHERN Sweden. Under typical geomagnetic conditions Protons from Coronal Mass Ejections are directed towards the Earth's Poles, hence these might be expected to produce the first reports of radioactive iodines created by the spallation of Cesium 133 by Solar Protons.

New Zealand: 18X AIRBORNE Radiation Detection in Dunedin

On Jan 29th there was an AIRBORNE radiation detection of 1.89 uS/Hr in Dunedin, New Zealand. The reading was roughly 18 times greater than background radiation.

Obviously without further data it is difficult to pinpoint the cause of the measured radioactivity. The detection does may be related to a high airborne reading which occurred in Caloundra, Australia on January 8th. The ocean currents which swing by Caloundra, Au also end up moving past Dunedin, Nz. The cold polar currents channel the warm currents from Caloundra towards Dunedin. The affect may be seen in the image below. It is with in the realm of possibility that both of these detections are Fukushima related and where driven by winds and ocean currents coming from Fukushima. Such a scenario could signal significant contamination of the Coral and Tasmin Seas.

It is important to note that Fukushima is not the only possible contamination source for these detections. The Dunedin reading also correlates with a Coronal Mass Ejection which was impacting the Earth. It is also certainly possible that the detection was from a completely local/regional.

However, given the potential for Northern and Southern Pacific ocean contamination it would be prudent for concerned individuals to take risk mitigating precautions until such time ocean sampling indicates otherwise.

Weaponized Fukushima Fallout: Radioactive Fullerenes and Endofullerenes

The improvised use of salt water to cool the Fukushima reactors and spent fuel pools resulted in the weaponization of Uranium fallout via the formation of Fullerenes and Endofullerenes. The term weaponization is based on our belief that this process significantly improved Probability of Kill (PK) values from a survivability / vulnerability analytical standpoint. RADIOACTIVE BUCKY BALLS!!! Think HOT PARTICLES are Bad? YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET !!!

"Experts" are starting to get a glimpse into how little they know about the witches' brew coming out of Fukushima. Today's revelation is that Fukushima Uranium is forming Bucky Balls via the action of salt water.

The picture above is a Carbon "Bucky Ball". So what is so bad about Radioactive Uranium Bucky balls?  Well, picture some one throwing very fine, non caking, radioactive "talcum powder" into the air; that in essence is the outcome of this finding.

But it gets worse, imagine that radioactive   "talcum powder" behaving and dispersing the exact same way when thrown into the water.

But it gets worse, notice in the picture above that the Buck Ball is actually a cage, now picture plutonium atoms trapped inside that cage.

But it gets worse, now picture how much greater a target these Bucky Balls are for spallation in the upper atmosphere.

What this finding means is that ALL the dispersion models are wrong, and NOT in the good way. It also means that the internal impact and damage from inhaling or consuming these particles is far greater than would other wise be expected. However, don't expect the "it's safe" mantra to change.

If you want to even begin to have an idea how bad this situation  is,  Google  the medical effects of Nano Particles(and remember they are discussing NON-Radioactive nano-particles)

ALERT- Solar Flare Interaction with High Atomic Weight Fukushima Fallout

There is a full halo Earth directed Solar Coronal Mass Ejection inbound, estimated to impact on the 1/21/12. The CME event will interact with high atomic weight fallout (both radioactive and NON-radioactive) in the upper atmosphere and produce a witches' brew of new radioactive fallout via nuclear spallation processes. The extent to which this will occur is difficult to determine without access to advanced simulation models, however previous such occurrences have correlated with the detections of radioiodines over Europe.

If the expected effects do occur, they will be most strongly be felt on the sunlit side of the planet. The evidence for such effects would be distributed and difficult to localize detections of fresh radioactive fallout. On the dark side of the planet the effects would produce unusual colors in the Northern Lights and greater penetration into the Southern Latitudes. An early arrival of effect should not be ruled out either.

The following photos from the SOHO space observatory shows the "snow" impacts of Protons on the Camera's CCD. When these Protons impact the non-radioactive Cesium 133 in the upper atmosphere they will spall out a host of radioactive iodines. The Cs-133 comes from the decay of Xenon-133 gas. Xe-133 is one of the primary most plentiful components of the fallout from Fukushima

EUROPEAN Radioactive IODINE Spallation PREDICTED by POTRBLOG

European radioactive iodine detections were predicted by POTRBLOG team as a consequence of the interaction of Coronal Mass Ejections with  Fukushima Fallout (both radioactive and non-radioactive).

The POTRBLOG team has alerted since April that the "Northern Lights" have the capability to spall a witches' brew of radioactive iodines over the sun lit side of the northern hemisphere. On October 24 a solar storm struck, with eastern Europe on the sun lit side of the storm. At the time the POTRBLOG team predicted "a step function jump in detections across the globe that could not be readily explained by via other means" would be a good indicator of such an event.

The current European detection MAY be indicative of the predicted Coronal Mass Ejection > Fukushima Fallout interactions warned of by the POTRBLOG team. HOWEVER, the data is not yet conclusive; confirming elements to look for would be the detection of other unusual radioactive iodines and fallout, dispersed in a manner that DOES NOT INDICATE A SPECIFIC POINT SOURCE. Making such a determination may be
made more difficult by outlying surrounding the events which are tied to point events like Fukushima.

However, we at POTRBLOG do not expect such an analysis to be made available for public consumption, as the confirmation of this event could induce wide spread anxiety as the situation continues for decades. In fact, it is more likely that public sources would confirm that the event was caused by a thyroid cancer afflicted deer hunter who happened to urinate off of his/her tree stand during a deer hunt; with the wind intercepting, and dispersing,  the I-133 laden urine across Europe before the tinkle could even hit the roses on the forest floor- a real Jägermeister indeed!

Red Sky At Night: Solar Flares Spawn Fukushima's Deadly Delight

Back in April and June 2011 the Potrblog team predicted that Fukushima's Fallout would create unusual Northern Lights. We now further refine those predictions of when and where to expect these unusual Northern Lights. We also tie the current events back to similar events during ARPA's project ARGUS and its relation to the University of California Berkeley.

"BAFFLING" Solar Storm Neither Baffling Nor A "Treat" for POTRBLOG.com Followers

"A baffling solar storm pulled colorful northern lights unusually far south, surprising space weather experts and treating skywatchers to a rare and spectacular treat". Of course, this Solar event was far less "baffling" and far less of a "treat" for those who follow the  alerts on POTRBLOG.com.

The POTRBLOG team first alerted about the risks of the interactions between Solar Coronal Mass Ejections and Fukushima Fallout back in April.  In fact one of the things we noted to look for were "unusual" Northern Lights.  The lights are more unusual in color, magnitude, and in scope because of the high atomic weight Fukushima Fallout in the atmosphere, and because of how the radioactive component of the fallout alters the electrical gradient in the atmosphere.

Post Fukushima such lights are no longer a treat, in fact they are the harbingers of the creation of a whole new witches brew of radioactive Fukushima related fallout.  It is a harbinger that grows more concerning as these Solar Storms are simultaneously increasing in magnitude as the upper atmosphere becomes more and more a long term dumping ground of both radioactive and non radioactive high atomic weight fallout from Fukushima.

The Unresearched Threat of Fukushima Photo-FISSION in Thunderstorms

Nuclear Fission occurring in that thunderstorm over your head?
Yes, it is possible thanks to the Fukushima disaster.

One of the great unknowns out of the Fukushima nuclear disaster is the effect of the long term pumping of high atomic weight elements into the atmosphere. I have previously discussed one such large scale threat, the nuclear spallation of Fukushima fallout (both radioactive and non-radioactive) resulting from Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections. But, there is another much closer and more frequent nuclear fission source in thunderstorms.

The lightening in thunderstorms actually produces potentially deadly levels of high energy gamma radiation, when that gamma radiation strikes higher atomic weight elements it will cause nuclear fission to occur. That photo-fission effect is not just limited to fissile materials. What makes the situation potentially more deadly is that the high atomic weight fallout from Fukushima may actually seed the formation of thunderstorms resulting in the creation of fresh radioactive materials from photofission. The strong correlation between the Fukushima disaster and the largest out break of thunderstorms / tornadoes in decades may be indicative of this affect.

The first indications of such nuclear fission occurring in the thunderstorms above our heads would be the detections of significant short half life radiation; much like the detection of radioactive fallout SIXTY-TWO TIMES greater than background radiation in the Saint Louis rainfall of 5/25/2011 seen in the videos below.

[Threat Alert] Solar Proton Bombardment of High Atomic Weight Fallout

A Solar Coronal Mass Ejection with Proton energies of greater than 100 MeV is set to make a "glancing" blow on the Earth 6/8/11 and for a few days following. The Solar storm will be the strongest since 2006 and will result in the visibility of the Northern Lights in Latitudes north of 38 degrees; the light show has the potential to be more unusual than normal because the upper atmosphere is filled with high atomic weight fallout from Fukushima.

The Fukushima fallout, both the radioactive stuff and the stuff that has decayed to be non radioactive, will be slammed with high energetic particles from the Solar Coronal Mass Ejection. Those particles include electrons, alpha particles, and protons, all of which may have energies broaching 1000 MeV. The result of those solar particles slamming into the radioactive and non-radioactive high atomic weight Fukushima fallout is a veritable witches brew of nuclear spallation, photofission, and et al generated deadly radioactive elements.

What makes this witches' brew of interactions potentially catastrophic is that unlike Fukushima where the radiation is coming from one single point on the planet in a continuous pump like fashion; these Solar particle nuclear spallations can create new dangerous radioactive particles near simultaneously over the entirety of the Northern Hemisphere. Unfortunately, this is almost all uncharted territory.

There is no readily available Arnie Gundersen equivalent who can give us a seat of the pants estimate of the likely damage from these interactions. Without the proper tools to model these interactions and quantify the risk, and absent anyone with requisite tools publicly stepping forward, the best I can offer is a readily verifiable description of ONE of MANY such Solar/Atmospheric nuclear spallation interactions and the worst case consequence. Hopefully as a result, someone with the right tools will step forward and provide a risk matrix with the associated likelihoods and impacts of these events.

Probably the easiest threat for the public to verify from the nuclear spallation of Fukushima fallout via Solar Coronal Mass Ejection is the production of radioactive iodine from the high energy spallation of Cesium 133 from solar produced protons. Fukushima has pumped the upper atmosphere full of radioactive Xenon 133. There are plenty of plume models that show the contamination, here is an example of one.

The radioactive Xenon 133 shown in the above chart has a half life of 5 days, after which half of it turns into non-radioactive Cesium 133. That non-radioactive Cesium 133 continues to float around in the upper atmosphere until it gets hit by a high energy proton ejected from a Solar Storm. Well it just so happens, that bombarding Cesium 133 with high energy protons is a method described in a US Patent to manufacture radioactive Iodine.


In short, the proton slams into the Cesium 133 like a cue ball into a rack of billiard balls. The result is the production other sub-atomic particles that shoot off looking to slam into something else, and a plethora of radioactive high atomic weight elements like 123Xe, 125Xe, 123I, 124I, 125I, 126I, and 129I. These radioactive Iodine and Xenon particles have half lives that range from hours to thousands of years. The radioactive particles which don't end up raining down into our thyroids are free to float around in the upper atmosphere for the next spallation (or other) reaction.

It is a scenario which sounds like a Bond villain's attempt to destroy the thyroid of every living mammal in the Northern Hemisphere. Unfortunately the long term high atomic weight atmospheric pump coming out of Fukushima combined with the upcoming Solar Maximum events over the next several years, moves the event from the realm of science fiction into the realm of the not impossible. Moreover this is only ONE of MANY such possible interactions.

Even though these spallation interactions will occur, I don't have access to the tools to readily calculate the distribution likelihood and impacts of these events. But, I can provide at least one rough guideline that people can use to judge some aspects of the threat. The size of the threat is proportional to visibility of the Northern Lights from lower latitudes. Charged particles from the sun flow towards the poles; solar storms cause geomagnetic affects that allow those particles to impact further away from the poles. The danger coincides and increases with the Northern Lights stretching further south. Hence, the greater the potential visibility of the the Northern Lights, the greater the risk of Solar induced nuclear spallation reactions.

In the current 6/8/11 Solar storm, the impact zone is as far south as Latitude 38 degrees North (roughly Saint Louis). That risk zone applies for the entire Northern Hemisphere from Scandinavia, Greenland, Russia, Canada, and the USA. The affect should be strongest on the the Sun lit side of the planet. Stay Out Of The Rain, don't fly through fallout, and say your prayers.

[Threat Alert] ONE Solar Storm = 71 American Fukushimas

Fukushima Daiichi has opened many people's eyes to the vulnerability of nuclear generation facilities to electricity loss and infrastructure failure. One risk area the the general public may not be fully aware of is infrastructure collapse due to either a High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) Blast or a Solar Storm / Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). A HEMP Blast would come from an enemy detonating a nuclear weapon a few hundred miles over head. For the time being, we can rule out a HEMP Blast because it makes no sense for an enemy to attempt that type of attack given that the Federal Reserve is attacking the nation more efficiently than any enemy could desire.

Much work has already been done to quantify the destructive potential of Solar Storms to our electrical grid and nation, but none of the publicly available research has focused on the potential of a large number of American nuclear reactors simultaneously experiencing a Fukushima type failure. The map  at the top of this post is a high altitude analysis of the nuclear generation facilities in the USA that could suffer a multiple years long electrical grid failures from a solar storm  equal in size to the one that hit the USA in 1921.

The map above correlates the data from a pre-Fukushima solar event impact study to the locations of nuclear generation facilities in the USA.  The large red circles are areas of the Nation that are likely to experience a total collapse and multiple year loss of the electrical grid from a May 13, 1921 sized solar storm. The primary failure mode is the solar induced destruction of very large electrical transformers. Moreover, these transformers are no longer manufactured in the United States, and the lead time to produce them is very long. The loss of those transformers and the long time it takes to replace them are the primary drivers that would keep the electricity off in the circled areas for potentially YEARS.


Based on the high level data, approximately 71 nuclear plants in the USA are at direct risk from such a solar storm. Not only would those nuclear generation plants be without a electricity for cooling their fuel pools, the logistics collapse from the loss of gasoline stations, transportation systems, food distribution, water distribution, and the associated societal upheavals would make the difficulties of the Fukushima recovery effort look like a walk in the park.

However, those are not the only threats from a post-Fukushima Solar Storm. Fukushima Daiichi  has resulted in the on going long term release and dumping of high atomic weight elements into the atmosphere. Those Fukushima particles, both radioactive and non-radioactive, provide the basis for large scale solar particle interactions via Solar Storms / Coronal Mass Ejections.  The associated spallation and fission reactions  will form new radioactive fallout simultaneously over the entire sun lit side of the Northern Hemisphere.  A preliminary analysis of such an even may be found here, further analysis on that eventuality is to follow.

There is another twist to the production of I123 by Coronal Mass Ejection that is slightly more troubling. The threat is not directly from the solar proton bombardment of Xenon 133, but rather from the proton bombardment of its decay product- Cesium 133. Xenon 133 has a half life of 5 days; the Cesium 133 it produces is stable and could be floating around for a long time.

I am going to use the described scenario in a novel as a way to take out the thyroids of every mammal on the sun facing side of the planet. The reality might be less apocalyptic, but it sure could be ugly if Fukushima remains a long term Xenon 133 pump in a period of much greater solar activity.

I have developed a conjecture that the Iodine 123 that may have been detected in Saint Louis Missouri may have a source other than direct production via fission at Fukushima.

It is possible that the Iodine 123 was produced via solar produced proton bombardment of Fukushima released radioactive Xenon gas . Under that scenario there would be a reduced risk of a highly radioactive Iodine 123 being found as one moved west from Saint Louis towards Fukushima (ie less threat for the west coast).

However, there is also a greater risk that a Coronal Mass Ejection could convert large quantities of Xenon into Iodine 123. This would be a predictable, but NOT readily post event detectable, fallout scenario with damaging repercussions for the thyroids of people caught in such an event.

I will have more on this conjecture later, but for now it would be wise for anyone located under (or down wind) high concentrations of Xenon gas to strongly avoid going outside if there is an on going Coronal Mass Ejection (proton event) in the area.

[Update]

The exposure risk might be predictable by tracking Xenon and Solar weather forecasts. Unfortunately, a strong Coronal Mass Ejection could subject an extremely large area to I123 fallout. Again, Lab tests would not catch this dosing after the fact because of the fast decay rate; later year's thyroid cancer rates would be evident though.

Stay out of the rain any where down wind of Fukushima.
